Teacher Leadership Program
At the heart of Leadership in American History is the Teacher Leadership Program. A cohort of middle school American history teachers will take part in three years of intensive staff development and, as a result, will increase their knowledge and level of instruction and thus the performance of their students. As Teacher Leaders, they will also gain content and strategies for delivering professional development to their colleagues throughout the city, as well as at national conferences. Teachers in this intensive and ongoing program will learn from some of the nation’s top historians in American history and be exposed to a myriad of documents, books, artifacts, landmarks, and strategies for using them to bring American history to life and make it meaningful for students.

• Summer, 2008 Pre-Institute

Those interested in becoming teacher leaders are invited to join us at a four-day summer institute at the CUNY Graduate Center. There, teachers will be immersed in history content and teaching strategies as they hear from nationally renowned historians and history, arts and cultural specialists.
    • Teacher Leadership Program, Part One
Those selected to continue the program as Teacher Leaders will join us for a series of 8 Saturdays from October, 2008 to May, 2009 at the CUNY Graduate Center. Teachers will again be exposed to historian lectures and hands-on workshops. They will also work collaboratively with colleagues and mentors to develop American history units of study. Mentors will work with teachers to implement the units in their schools.
• American History Resource Centers
Each school with a Teacher Leader will receive funds for an American History Resource Center. Teacher leaders will be given a budget and guidance in ordering materials for the Center. They will also be guided in how to use the Centers to promote professional development in their schools.
    • Teacher Leadership Program, Part Two

In this four-day summer institute in 2009, Teacher Leaders will re-examine and enrich their study of American history from the perspective of the Supreme Court over time. Teacher Leaders will deconstruct and evaluate the workshops from the perspective of staff developers in preparation for developing their own workshops. DOE staff will also oversee mentors representing each partner who will work with Teacher Leaders on developing their own professional development plans.

    • Teacher Leadership Program, Part Three
Following their two years of intensive work in American history content and strategies, Teacher Leaders will attend five Saturdays during the 2009-2010 school year, developing skills in delivering professional development. The Teacher Leaders will work with mentors to integrate American history content and pedagogy in order to develop and run workshops at national conferences and in a city wide American History Middle School Conference in the spring of 2010.
