Teacher Leadership Program

A cohort made up of up to 40 elementary and middle school American history teachers will take part in up to five years of intensive staff development and, as a result, will increase their knowledge and level of instruction and thus the performance of their students. As teacher leaders, they will also gain content and strategies for delivering professional development to their colleagues. Teachers in this intensive and ongoing program will learn from some of the nation’s top American historians and be exposed to a myriad of documents, books, artifacts, landmarks, and museums and strategies for using them to bring American history to life and make it meaningful for students. Teachers enrolled in the American Dream Teacher Leadership Program will begin by attending:

Teachers participating in the program will be expected to do the following:
  • Original research project presented as a blog, wiki, or power point
  • Create several standards-based lesson plans based on the content and strategies presented during the program
  • Work with colleagues across the grades to develop a vertical plan for teaching certain topics in American History
  • Develop a plan to help students create original research project for NYC History Day (includes submitting projects from at least one class)
  • Create and present American history workshops for colleagues
  • Take on leadership role in the school
  • Participate in all evaluation activities (includes pre and post-tests, written and oral evaluations, submitting lesson plans and other materials, taking part in interviews with grant evaluators)

Who is eligible?

  • 4th and 5th grade teachers and social studies cluster teachers
  • 7th and 8th grade American history teachers

Preference will be given to school teams of 2-4 teachers.
